Black History Month
Throughout February, the United States turns its focus toward its African American citizens. Known as Black History Month, this event celebrates the achievements of African Americans. It also brings attention to their hardships.
Every year, there is a theme associated with Black History Month. In 2021, the theme is “The Black Family: Representation, Identity, and Diversity.”
The Importance of Black History Month
Black History Month is important to the Black community because it praises their contributions to our great nation. Both prominent and lesser-known figures have their stories told to honor their achievements.
Yet, it’s not just about celebrating the accomplishments of African Americans. Black History Month also uplifts the community in a way that gives Black Americans a voice. Their voices bring outside recognition to the Black community.
How to Celebrate Black History Month
Getting involved with Black History Month is easy. Anyone can celebrate it, even those outside of the African American community. As more people recognize the month-long event, it spreads to more people. Even other countries, like Canada and the UK, are beginning to celebrate Black History.
Perhaps the best way to celebrate this heritage month is through education. Take the time to learn about significant Black figures in history. Learn about their lives, accomplishments, and legacies. Additionally, gain some insight into struggles faced by the community. Learn what is going on and how it can be helped.
Through museums and African American associations, the public can find informative resources online. Their diverse programs detail African American culture and the overall Black experience.
